Ymir Report #65 ā€” PHP 8.2 support

Heya friend!

INTRO

Greetings back from Canada!

I have largely focused these past two weeks on my consulting clients. I will probably do the same over the next two weeks.

Otherwise, WordPress 6.4 just came out. WordPress 6.4 now recommends PHP 8.1 and 8.2. I decided that this was the time to add PHP 8.2 support even if WordPress still says it's in beta support.

Business is going well this month still! But December isn't looking too hot. Always the šŸŽ¢ with this šŸ˜…

PRODUCT

As I mentioned, I only touched PHP 8.2 support this cycle. I started looking at the changes around logging. That said, it was a heavier lift than what I had time for with all the consulting work.

At this point, Ymir supports six PHP versions. (Seven with PHP 8.3 eventually!) I'm thinking about how I'll manage deprecations in the future. The good thing is I'm building the runtime against the Symfony LTS version and support ends at the end of 2025.

MARKETING

A few podcasts came out these past few weeks that involved Ymir.
ā€‹
First, I recorded a podcast for WP Builds a few months ago. It finally came out last week! šŸ„³ I discuss Ymir, serverless, building in public.

While I wasn't a guest on that one per se, we had a really good episode of Do the Woo DevChat. We had Ben Gabler from Rocket.net and Tom Fanelli from Conversio. We discussed the challenges of hosting WooCommerce sites and I had some insights on that as well. Probably one of the best episodes we did this year.

BUSINESS

This month is looking really good. I had a lot of trials. It's looking like I might have a net gain of three subscribers. However, I have cancellations coming next month so that puts a dampen on how well things did this month.

On top of that, it's American Thanksgiving this week. This is usually the beginning of the slower period before the Christmas holidays. So I'm not expecting a lot of movement until January.

Heya friend! Carl here. You signed up to receive updates about Ymir, the WordPress serverless DevOps platform that Iā€™m building. INTRO Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! šŸ¦ƒšŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ I want to keep this report positive today. I'll discuss the WordPress situation and Ymir once I've had time to process things some more. It's been a lot for everyone. On happier news, I'm delighted to say I have my second agency partner: 40Q! We launched their first project last month. The real test for the platform was last...

Heya friend! Carl here. You signed up to receive updates about Ymir, the WordPress serverless DevOps platform that Iā€™m building. INTRO Heya! It's been a week since I came back from WCUS. I think it was one of the best venues I've been to. I had a really great time, and it felt good to catch up with friends. A few parties showed a lot of interest around my consulting work. So that was good! The whole mood of the conference was soured by Matt's Q&A session. Without rehashing the whole drama,...

Heya friend! Carl here. You signed up to receive updates about Ymir, the WordPress serverless DevOps platform that Iā€™m building. INTRO Heya! I hope you had a wonderful summer! I've been slowly getting back into the spin of things. I think taking a bit of time away from Ymir was helpful. I'm excited to get back to working on it. The business itself is still not doing that great. I think I'm near the subscriber floor. That said, I'm not getting any new trials, so there's no growth at the...
